Governments have a near-universal interest in optical security features that are easy to verify and difficult to forge or counterfeit. Ideally these should help examiners identify the document as genuine, even under difficult light conditions or when reviewed outside the issuing country.
There are three basic verification levels:
- Level 1 for security features that can be verified by human senses
- Level 2 for features that require simple tools to verify them, such as a magnifying glass or UV lamp
- Level 3 for features that can only be verified with specialized tools or in the forensic lab
Level 1 and level 2 features are of primary interest for border control authorities.
Our goal is to offer security features involving a static and a dynamic part, both containing the personal details of the holder.
Card & Data Page Security Features
Holographic security threads
Holographic security threads can be combined with highly complex production processes to create an ‘easy to verify’ security feature that combines security elements from different verification levels. As such, this is a perfect solution for making ID documents tough to counterfeit.
MAGIC-ID is an advanced multiple image technology. Depending on the viewing angle of the card, images seem to move in multiple and/or opposite directions. The pixels are preprinted in a specific configuration that, when combined with sophisticated lens structures, allows a new dimension of dynamically moving effects. While MAGIC-ID is very easy to incorporate into the card design and very easy to verify, it is very difficult to forge.
Fuse®-ID is a patch of special optically variable ink (OVI) combined with a personalized photograph of the document holder. In addition to the "usual" effect of the optically variable ink, i.e. changing its color when viewed from different angles, Fuse®-ID enables personalization by laser engraving. The initial blue changes to a shade of silver under laser light. Comparing the "ghost image" with the original photo is an excellent anti-counterfeiting measure.
Easy verification of an ID document authenticity and the personalized information is the key aspect of transparent elements in ID documents.
As a result of the combination of overlapping security printing, laser personalization and its unique form factor(s), Veridos‘s LOOK ID is very easy to verify and very difficult to counterfeit.
As a side benefit, the eye-catching design is usually a favorite for passport holders.
This unique, highly secure color inkjet personalization technology integrates color information such as the photograph into the polycarbonate substrate by using specially developed inks that are based on liquid polycarbonate. When this ink is laminated into the card body it bonds together with the polycarbonate foils, forming a monoblock. The formula of these inks ensures durable and reliable bonding inside of the document. The document thus becomes tamper-proof and resistant to delamination and forgery.
Paper-based Security Features
TWIST-ID® – Dynamic fluorescent feature
By varying the distance of the UV lamp, this configuration of lighter and darker colors produces a dynamic rotating effect.
The dynamic effect is triggered by the sequential illumination of visible light (daylight), semi-UV light (semi-daylight situation) and then pure UV light and vice versa. With a greater distance between UV lamp and the passport (daylight situation), the motif printed in the darker color appears dominant. When closer to the UV lamp, the motif printed with the fluorescent color gains brilliance. Shifting between the two distances produces the aforementioned rotary effect.
FIT® – Fine Intaglio Technology
Finest intaglio elements, produced by physically engraved printing plates. These intaglio elements are extremely sharp.
Superimposition of two or more design elements by means of color gradation and high tactility.
Finest intaglio printing in the form of halftone modulation. Interaction of classic line graphics and intaglio printing for tactile elements.
PEAK® security feature (latent printing)
PEAK® combines offset printing with intaglio embossing technology. PEAK® is printed on the end pages and cannot be produced using ordinary printing machines or color photocopiers.
Depending on the viewing angle, the PEAK® feature is discernible as a light-on-dark background or dark-on-light background.
The PEAK® feature represents an advanced version of the latent image. Like the latent image, PEAK® can also be verified by observing the feature at an extreme angle against the light. In addition, however, the PEAK® feature can also easily be verified by swaying the passport and observing how the light/dark effects react at normal viewing angles
INFACIO® personalization on paper based inner pages
This technology requires the preparation of a field (such as the photo area) for high transparency INFACIO® personalization using short-waved UV inks. A full-color ghost image duplicates the applicant’s photo on the original data page, but only appears under UV light.
